Smiling Synchs Heartbeat with Baby

More reasons to smile!

io9.com
Mothers and their babies are often said to share a deep, intimate connection...but even so, this new discovery is weird. Simply by looking and smiling at each other, moms and babies synchronize their heartbeats to within milliseconds of each other. Researchers at Bar-Ilan University in Israel found....

Give Them Those 5 Minutes Now

Tip of the day: You’re never too busy to give your child 5 minutes of your undistracted time. These moments add up over time to equal an important tie in your relationship. So next time you hear, “Mommy???” turn toward your child, eye-to-eye, crouch down, and give 5 important minutes. ~ :o)

Bullying

Kristen Cook and Stephanie Buckman said it best....we won't be able to stop bullying altogether but it certainly would help if we taught our children to accept and respect our peers with their differences. It would take a very brave, confident individual/child/onlooker to stand up against bullying. I think alot of kids WANT to stand up against it but are too afriad (that the bullying would turn onto them, etc). But if one brave individual did, I think others would quickly join them. The 'pack mentality' certainly comes into play here.

Sesame Street and Breastfeeding

I think it would be great for Sesame Street to talk about this. I know many kids that watch this show and are still breastfed themselves! Mila sees me breastfeed Emmy all the time and since she's at the age where she copies everything I do - she even breastfeeds her dolls!! I really don't understand why people make such a big deal out of it. It's completely natural and normal part of a daily routine for many families.

Baby Carriers

Another reason we recommend babies being transferred to the Ergo carrier as they grow. The popular Baby Bjorn is not recommended and this illustration shows why. P.S. We have Ergo's on order and will be offering special pricing to put them in the hands of our Mamas :)

Old-Fashioned Play Builds Serious Skills

Elaborate toys, busy schedules and the demise of recess have left children with fewer opportunities for imaginative play — and it shows. Researchers say changing the way children play has changed their emotional and cognitive development.

Play and the Classroom

www.simplicityparenting.com
Play-based learning is a concept that has been around for a long time. It is through play that children learn how to make sense of the world around them. While play-based learning doesn’t seem like that foreign of a concept to most of us, it can be rather difficult to define. Play is the medium thro...

Why Homebirths are Worth Considering

Came across this article this morning on the Huffington Post:

Why Home Births Are Worth Considering
"A new analysis by Dr. Joseph Wax comparing home births and hospital births, which was published in the recent issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, not only presents misleading conclusions, it drives a wedge between two groups that cannot afford a greater divide: medical doctors and midwives.
The study documents similar perinatal (or the period immediately surrounding birth) mortality rates for home and hospital births, but claims a three-fold increase in neonatal (measured up to 28 days after delivery) mortality for home deliveries. Yet this analysis contains serious limitations and concerns those of us who practice midwifery in an out-of-hospital setting." Read more...

Interview Questions for Birth Team

During my search for health care providers that were natural birth friendly, I put together a few questionnaires for my interviews. These questions are compiled from my Bradley Class, attachment parenting books and many sites online. Most questions were answered before I got a chance to ask, but it was good for me to have an idea of what I wanted to make sure I had answered before I got there. Hope this helps!
